The Origins
In the 16th century, during the arrival of Catherine de’ Medici in France, the leather artisans of Grasse — then known for their tanning — invented an entirely new craft: scenting leather. To charm the royal court, they developed an original technique to perfume gloves, giving rise to the very first scented leathers.
Though brief and little-known, this moment marked a key turning point for Grasse. It was the beginning of the city’s transformation — from a center of tanning to a world of perfumery.
